One attribute common to most romantic comedies is that you can interpret the last ten minutes of the film by watching the first ten. The appeal lies in the path traversed by the screenplay to reach that inevitable happy end. That's precisely the case with The Proposal which has a predictable plot but the peppy proceedings still keep you 'engaged'.
Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock), the high-handed chief editor of a publishing firm unexpectedly learns that she will be deported to Canada since her US visa has expired. To save the eviction, Margaret spontaneously declares her unsuspecting subordinate Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds) as her fianc��e who she is all set to marry.
To make their affair look authentic for immigration investigations, the couple is forced to spend a weekend with his parents in Alaska. Much against their reluctance, the family persuades them to marry over the weekend. What happens next is as predictable as any other rom-com.
The characterizations are as much clich��d as much conventional the core plot is. The girl is snootily rich, bitchy boss and parentless, with no concern for human emotions. The boy, heading back to his hearty hometown, has a strained relationship with his father. There���s also the boy���s ex-flame who has no background account or reason to be looked forward to in the film.
Nevertheless the humour of the film clicks at most instances with an assortment of old and new gags. The dialogues are witty and comic timing of characters just perfect. The women���s night-out sequence at the bar amidst a male striptease by Oscar Nunez (who also doubles up as a priest at the marriage later) is hilarious. So is the granny���s wild dance in the woods.
Alas the film opts for a very convenient climax in the confessional mode after which it stretches even more for that much obvious proposal scene. The funny interrogation bits in the end credits, however, makes up for the loss and is a good enough reason for you to sit through till the finish.
Ryan Reynolds exhibits perfect comic timing and amusing facial expressions. Sandra Bullock, who doubles up as the producer, is convincing as the snobbish boss. Betty White as the grandma gets the funniest lines and sauciest scenes.
All said and done, this film is just the perfect proposal for the weekend with your love.
