To communicate with a device connected via universal serial bus (USB), a computer needs the driver, not just for the device itself, but also for the USB controller. Microsoft Windows uses USB universal, enhanced and eXtensible controllers; this enables businesses to connect and use legacy, high-speed and SuperSpeed plug-and-play hardware from the same PC. If you've reinstalled the OS to a workstation but Windows failed to load the USB controllers, or if you want to install updated controllers because the existing drivers are malfunctioning, you can obtain the latest drivers from the manufacturer.
Fresh Install
1.
Click 'Start | Control Panel | System and Security | System.' Review the information next to System Type to see if the OS is 32-bit or 64-bit.
2.
Install and run an application like CPU-Z or Belarc Advisor (see Resources below) to find the system details. Select the 'Motherboard' tab or check under System Model to find the make and model of the motherboard.
3.
Navigate to the motherboard manufacturer's website and browse for the model.
4.
